Directors Cut sucked compared to the original. Just because it's what Kelly wanted from the start, doesn't mean it's good, more just that Kelly doesn't know what made the first version so good (as evidenced by his output since). All the explanation of what was happening to Donnie makes the film a lot less meaningful.

@susad Nah, most people and critics disagree. The directors cut was the INTENDED version of the film. Metacritic, rottentomato, etc all agree the directors cut is the superior version. Don't get me wrong though the original is a masterpiece as well.

The director's cut can't resist explaining. The original version allows you to interpret. Hence the difference between being lectured to and participating in a work of art.

@MichaelHowrie The Bunnymen track is still in the movie, but in a different scene. Kelly really wanted the INXS track for the opening scene and originally edited it that way, but couldn't get the rights. A lot of critics have said the director's cut has a better flow than the original, and I think the extended length adds to knowing the characters more and is well-paced.
People are entitled to their own preferences, though but in my mind the director's cut is definitive.

@TheOneartist Just because it's what Richard wanted from the beggining doesn't mean that the directo's cut is any good in comparison. Almost all of the changes are simply distracting and break the flow. The opening bike scene is so annoyingly... almost cheery in comparison to the brilliant Bunnymen track. The added graphics also almost always don't fit with the style. The few additions I've seen that I've liked so far are this eye bit, and the continued original timeline memories idea.

@TheMultiverse666 You're not missing out if you haven't seen the original, in my opinion. Fanboys can say what they want, but the Director's Cut is what Richard Kelly had wanted from the beginning.
He originally wasn't able to include the extra scenes and Philosophy of Time Travel text because of time and budget constraints. In fact, at one point the movie was going to direct-to-video, but was saved by Drew Barrymore's film company.
the two eye scenes are strikingly beautiful imo and were the only plus points in the director's cut.. the rest of the added, adjusted and deleted scenes made it inferior to the original.
