Here's some now-rare footage from a VHS tape I shot on May 12 1986. After catching the WMRY overpass on US 33 we then go into downtown Elkins to check out the WM/Chessie yard (now defunct!). At this time the yard was still in use-bigtime! Also in evidence is a C&O RY loco which somehow escaped repainting into Chessie livery. Unfortunately, in the coming years, Elkins yard would be gradually phased out, mostly due to the line out of Cumberland MD being washed out in spots during a 1985 flood (got footage of that too!). Note the US 219 overpass in the distance before the video ends-the bridge is now gone and US 219 north is now in the railroad cut!
I have lots more (and better) footage of the WM Elkins yard, including the absolute last day of service! I'll be gradually posting video leading up to that fateful day! This is my first video of the Elkins yard and figured it's a perfect place to start. Mastered in 720p hi-def in an effort to maintain whatever quality there might be.
P.S. Listen for my comment on the gas prices!

  • I grew up in Corriganville, .. Rock Cut, at the bone cave, was my playground in my teen yrs . .. I have much WM memorabilia and my passion for the WMRR is still kept alive ... thanks for posting bullfrog.

  • @U2rocksKEN I've always wanted to check out Bone Cave...or, more to the point, what's left of it! Passed it a lot on WMRY rides! Passed through Corriganville more times than I can count in the last 30 years!! Explored the C&P RR in Mt. Savage.

I too fave the WM and have some photos of original equipment before it all slid into Chessie! Also have many HO WM pieces!

I'll soon be uploading a couple Chessie runbys on WM rails! Thanx 4 watching!

  • Thanks for your video clips - I am a Western Maryland fan in Australia and do enjoy what you are providing - thanks from Downunder!

  • @RailfanDownunder Thanx! I replied to your channel page before reading your comment on this vid-glad you're interested in our Western Maryland RY! Working on something "special" for my 100th vid (which will have some WMRY) but, after that, back to the archives to look for more! Just that I have so much in the archives to go through!

P.S. Had an uncle in Sydney before he passed in 1999.

  • This is great I was born and raised in Elkins. Its great to see what the old yard looked like before they tore up all the tracks. Thanks for Posting!!!!
