80 metre flight wins Birdman competition

Tony Hughes won the 28th International Birdman of Bognor competition with a hang-glider flight of 84.4 metres. Hughes was attempting to reach a distance of 100 metres to win a jackpot prize of 25,000 pounds.While many of the birdmen were classified as fun jumpers, wearing fancy dress costumes with no aerodynamic potential at all, there were a small number of serious competitors hoping to glide or flap their way to the prize distance.One man taking it very seriously was David Moore from Connecticut, Unites States. A bat suit is not a serious way to approach this-they need a large fall to build up speed to fly and have a glide ratio of 2.5 at the best,hang gliders have a 15-20 glide ratio.The problem is even these need to fly at 40-60 km/h which is very hard to get jumping off a pier.
