A couple of factors that helped the action in this race was the very bumpy and dirty track which meant the natural racing line quite often wasn't the fastest. The other factor was the Michelin tyres. The Michelin qualifiers were hopeless while the Goodyear qualifiers were brilliant. In the race it was the complete opposite. Those two facts aside, John Watson on a good day could outdrive anyone.

Yeah, that was the theme for the McLarens in 1983. Watson and Lauda would qualify way down the field, gain about 10-12 places in the first 10 laps or so, and then slowly work their way up even further.

People wonder why there was so much overtaking back then. Well, it was because there was a ton of variables for any given race.

cstrnutt2004: I have the Full Race in Italian, and also the BBC Highlights. So trust me when I say this, you would have seen more of the McLaren's by being in Long Beach that day, because the producer didn't even notice they were flying through the field until they were up to 6th and 7th.

Amazingly, the producer didn't catch a single overtake by Lauda in this race.

We couldn't believe Lauda and Watson's charge thru the field, it was and still is the best race at Long Beach ever save for 1977 when Mario won there
