This video was used in TheGymPress Vol.2 Iss.3. Refer to the article by Valentin Uzunov "The Handstand: a four stage training model" for more information.
The video is originally from a presentation by Tammy Biggs produced by USECA video club, on Floor basics (this drill was used specifically in the video in the training of back extension roll blind change)

  • BAD FOR ELBOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can this person not see that!!

they're all at least 10 degrees past 180

  • I hope you are referring to the elbow hyperextension. If so than..actually there is nothing that can be really done (Aside from injury prevention stuff). This is very common among female gymnasts.

The drill in itself is not bad for the elbows however at all, unless you are collapsing onto your hands, however given that in order to the drill you need to be able to hold a decent handstand it suggests that you are ready for it.

please re-examine your opinion, or elaborate

  • GYMNASTICS GIRLS! ARE HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!

  • My elbows hyper extend and I've been doing hand stands for years. Not one single elbow problem, only wrist pain. Wrist hyperextension=pain

  • uummm as others have said....hyper extended elbows are pretty common in girls...and hyper extended knees...It is often hereditary...Nothing you can do about this other that strengthening arms...i.e. triceps, biceps...shoulders and forearms...This drill is also called a Thomas Touch...very common drill and an excellent drill.

  • thats tammy biggs, shes an awesome coach, she appears on "gymnastics minute" videos

  • oh damn....they all push their arms out...they all will got problems on their elbow hinges.... :D

  • @flip4gym13 alot of gymnast have HYPERextended elbows... almost ever gymnast i know has hyperextened elbows

  • I have seen Tammy train gymnasts, she is very kind. She is trying to see if they are tight enough to maintain that one handed support.

  • Tammy Biggs is probably one of the best trainer of coaches in the whole world&@ Congresses she is the kindest too What could be considered dangerous for regular people (like the hyperextension coachwayne2 talks about) in gymnastics can be seen as normal, that is why you never go to a regular Dr but a sport Dr. since a regular one would tell you to stop doing gymnastics It is true that most of the time good gymnasts are not necessarily good coaches but Tammy Biggs is the best in gymnasticsMY2CNTS

  • Silly Silly People!!! It's sad that most still have not figured out that a good gymnast does not automatically equate to a good coach!! Ask yourself how many of your current level 10-elite gymnasts you would necessarily hand over a group of kids to! Good coaching is learned, earned and worked for, not INHERITED VIA TIME SERVED IN COMPETITION!!!!!! p.s. The drill is a highly effective, well known and practically necessary staple for bar pirouette progressions! No harm Seen!

  • My 7 year old daughter has actually worked with Tammy on a couple different occasions.... She is actually a very nice and caring person!!!!
