A simple plan for a leisurely hike: rather than climb up any mountains this week we'll hike around them. Reality: A very fun and leisurely 5 mile hike to the Gorge Trail between Cadillac and Door Mountain with lots of goofing around and camaraderie. Then, all hell broke loose. The moment we turn onto the Gorge Trail, we started punching through the calf deep snow. Nothing major and we were all having fun. By the time we crested the pass, the snow was knee deep so we detoured over to the boulder field below Cadillac. We were very relieved to see the trail signs showing that it was all down hill from there, but little did we know what we were in for. The snow was very steep and very deep with nothing but rocks and pools of rushing ice water to greet you when you punched through. It was 1.5 miles of hell trudging through waist deep snow, plowing through hemlock groves, and wading through ice cold water desperately trying to find any semblance of stable ground. When we finally emerged onto the Park Loop Road, we were all cold, wet and miserable, but very happy to be back on solid ground. And, we were all very grateful to be warm and dry that night.
