Chardon Local School District Superintendent Joe Bergant is resigning July 31, 2012, to seek a "new career opportunity."
Bergant announced his decision Monday night midway through a board of education meeting in order to give board members more than adequate time to find a replacement, including someone possibly from within the school district.
In a statement read to the board, Bergant said his 10 1/2-month advance notice should give the board ample time "to set the process in place, as soon as possible, to afford any qualified candidates to be made aware of this great opportunity."
Bergant urged the board to begin the search for a new superintendent as soon as possible because 2012 will be a busy year.
"We have a lot to do this year in 'growing' our achievement ratings, completing year five of our current strategic plan, implementing the capital improvement plan, development of the next strategic plan, fulfilling each of our line administrator's mutual expectations, and sundry challenges that will present themselves to us on a daily basis," Bergant said.
