It came out exactly 1 YEARS before 'The Message'. Radical!

I don't know about 1980, but this track reached Philly in March,1982 on two labels -Rissa Chrissa (All Black label), and Brunswick. We rocked this uptown 'til about October. "The Message" dropped in July.

Damn! I forgot about this jam! Thank you for posting it! Real Hip Hop at its best!!

this is the dope.

Melle Mel's verse on The Message was actually the last verse on the B-side of Super Rappin' in 1979 -- so technically, he is still the first :)

@johnnyroast "The Big Throwdown" originally came out in 1980, on Rissa-Chrissa Records. Then, Brunswick picked -up the record and continued its release in 1981.

@WorldwideGrooves well 1 year before The Message but yeah it rocks!

Oh Yes!...dis is what I'm talkin' 'bout! Bangin'!!! Thx
Man...This record made Rap history!! It's one of the FIRST rap records to talk about political and social issues. It came out YEARS before "The Message" (by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five). This jam even talks about "foreign oil", which is a major concern TODAY. "The Big Throwdown" was way ahead of it's time!!!
