Mexico: Aztecs - 22 Nov 07

In the heart of Mexico City archaeologists have made a major new discovery-- the tomb of an Aztec king. Mexico's Native heritage is evident everywhere one looks-- from the ancient monuments in the countryside, to the magnificent object preserved in its museums, to the faces of its people. Yet Mexico has an often complex relationship with its past. Al Jazeera's senior Washington correspondent Rob Reynolds reports from Mexico City.

@nauiocelotl Keeping in mind that at the end of the day we are essentially the ones who choose our racial identities, the whole mestizo thing is really more propaganda than fact, sure we have european blood and so what? Any group that comes into contact will mix, why is European blood so important that our indigenous side is nearly destroyed? Still I don't hate Spaniards, there were even few good ones like De Las Casas.

@GermanConquistador08 Cuauhtemoc after seeing his people were doomed turned himself in to stop the suffering, he wasnt captured. Cortes then fearing an uprising hanged Cuauhtemoc in a trip to Guatemala. Many things people say are assumptions or misconceptions, not based on facts. The truth is Spain comitted genocide over most of the american continent. Thats a fact. It will be very hard to reconstruct what happened for the spaniards arranged history as they pleased to look good.

maybe, maybe one day, indians will again supervise and guard their ancestors archeological legacy. Until now, mexican archeological sites and museums, are kept away from their true legitimate descendants. Today´s mexican indians are not aloud to perform any ritual in their forefathers sacred sites, and they are usually shunned away from mexican academic centers. Mexico its still a spanish catholic colony, were indians are treated as foreigners, folkloric curiosities or underveloped human beings.

Mexico is a deeply racist place. I know many beautiful Mexcan women who would have no chance of ever winning a Mexican beauty contest because of the color of their skin. Probably three of the ten most beautiful women I have ever seen in real life have been dark-skinned Mestizas who you would never on Mexican TV. Fortunately, they are all in college and working on real careers.
