UW-Stout Protest Against Westboro Baptist Church

On April 10th 2008, Westboro Baptist Church decided to form a "non-threatening" protest in regards to the recent tragic deaths of three students in a house fire. The four representatives preached hate and negative views about religion, people in general, and the students at the school. They also planned to attend the funerals of the late students and protest there invading the privacy of the mourning families.

Stout students did not handle this lightly.

Over 1,000 students came with signs, banners, and their voices and stood up against the WBC.

So when Westboro Baptist Church thought that it's okay to protest at our school? We thought not... see for yourself!

Ugh, I can think of SO MANY more useful things to scream at the WBC than what these students are. I mean, obviously the school is grieving their loss, and they don't want the WBC to picket at funerals. NO ONE wants that.

But I digress. And I understand these students' frustration and anger. This is a terrible time for them, and the WBC is doing a terrible thing to these people.

Having transferred to Stout in 2009, I've only recently learned that the WBC came here a year before I did. While I don't think I've ever seen anything as deeply, sadly misguided as the WBC, I think the Stout student body really dropped the ball. Stout was given an opportunity to send a strong, peaceful message that God is love, and they instead turned into an angry mob. What would the WBC have done if they showed up to campus that day and nobody was there for them to provoke? 1st John 4:8
