A brief look at the fifth, that quintessential Platonic Solid, the Pentagonal Dodecahedron. Four of these five convex regular polyhedra are introduced in Plato's "Timaeus" as corresponding to the four "elements" or "essences" earth, air, fire, and water. The dodecahedron is related to the all-embracing Cosmos itself, and symbolizes a mysterious fifth essence, above and beyond all others, a quintessence.

  • Thanks! I should have done more, maybe quoted from the Timaeus itself, but the actual passage is not terribly clear.
