September 25, 2008 marked twenty-five years since the passing of Jim O'Brien, Action News anchorman and weatherman who died in a skydiving accident. This video clip was from the 11 PM edition of Action News on September 25, 1983 and features:

- A report about the skydiving accident filed by reporter Verdon Odom.

- A look back at O'Brien's career at Channel 6 by former anchor Chris Wagner.

- And a poignant tribute by current weeknight anchor Jim Gardner.

Also featuring sportscaster Gary Papa grieving.

  • That was a good man... I met him as a child and he would have been a broadcasting icon even had he not died. Many do not realize, his daughter starred on Frazier. We'll not forget...

  • Wow...I was too young to know who Jim O'Brien was, but I;m not too young to realize the impact he had to the news staff at Channel 6. When gary Papa died, I'm sure that many people in the newsroom thought about Jim O'Brien a bit. He will always be in the hearts of Philadelphians and in the newsroom at 6ABC.

    BTW- Was the Rick Williams listed in the credits the same Rick Williams that does the morning and noon newscasts now?

  • i remember his comical weather reports. sunny skies he termed a "good guy," stormy weather was a "bad guy." he would say : "we got a bad guy coming up the coast from the south, but a good guy is on the way right after that." he wasn't your typical boring reporter. he personalized everything he covered with emotion and wit.

  • I was 9 and live near new Hanover township. I remember this day and this video brought the memories back.
