why are you talking about mac adresses lol
there drive keys flashed onto the boards not mac adresses....
and you do not get an rrod from using the wrong board in a dvd drive ... jeez

Why waste the money and replace it? It can usually be fixed with a little WD40. It's not that the drive goes bad per say... It's more of a build up of dust that slows the driver.

you can just take the motor out and use wd-4o to lubricate it and it works fine

so your saying that if you keep the card from your old drive and just put it in a new one it will still work? but does the new drive have to be the same model as the old one, can you put your old card into a newer model?
