This demonstration shows an embedded Linux system booting in less than one second. The demo was shown at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain in February, 2009.

The demo shows how an automotive, military, aerospace, or other application can achieve a rapid start from a cold boot. The display becomes fully active in less then 1.5 seconds from cold boot. This includes the hardware initialization time, so the actual Linux system boot time is under one second.

  • MontaVista Linux is intended for embedded industrial applications where IT DOES matter.

    The smart phone example below is a good one too.

  • this is perfectly reasonable, at 400 MHz with an assumed CPI of 2 that means they have approximately 300 million instructions to do the boot. With lots of work over DMA in parallel to CPU work, this looks quite doable. 300 million instructions is a lot of work, sufficed to boot pretty big operating systems a decade ago.

  • hmm, since the kernel probably won't be modified when it's in ram, I wonder if you could preload it - as in, have the addresses where the kernel would normally reside be made of flash containing the kernel...

  • hmmm.... so this is the OS going on this pocket PC I was reading about. CPU uses less than 8watts. But then I understand Google Chrome will be booting ultra fast too. But then mobiles will prolly be using Android on clamshell or sliders configs.

    I read that pocket and mobile PC market will grow to be larger than desktops and laptops combined. Over 450 Million in around 2 years w/ average 32gig fast drives.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure what you mean. I'm unable to fully comprehend what you wrote.

    The batteries don't really overcharge on a laptop because my Mac laptops are built to prevent that. I do turn them off in the evening when I don't use them.

  • I tried to change PC power usage attitude: manufacturers, educators, importantly software writers and users. First 24/7 & screensaver use must be tackled, then hardware power efficiency, then CPU work not of direct benefit. Then the big power wastage of over charging batteries will be significant. Only after that tackled should Thibaulthalpern turn off 2 sleeping laptops. I wish everyone thought about it that much. Please leave them on sleeping, talk & make an issue of it to everyone. Great!
