hmm what it feels like to hire a freelancer: "why can't this idiot do what I want? I told him I wanted it to look clean! Isn't that enough info? He should be lucky I'm paying him $5 an hour! my 9yr old son could do a better job than this, in fact I'm going to get my son to do some designs and pass them on to the freelancer. Also, I know our colors are blue and white, but I think they should be Yellow and red, like McDonalds, because they're popular. It should only take him 5 mins in photoshop."

The issue is that we do far, far more than "sit and draw." I'd bet good money that you couldn't design a functional website, put massive amounts of information into an easy-to-understand format, or create a strong brand for a company. Not that you should necessarily be able to, that's what designers are for. The problem arises when people think that because the end product is something simple, the process of making it must be, too. It isn't. It can be grueling, hard work.

Depends on the kind of work they do, but any kind of work that involves using a mouse or tablet for extended periods will fuck up your shoulders and/or wrists, unless you have all the super ergonomic stuff, which even then some of them don't work for everyone.
Designer is a very broad term. Artist is as well, but generally artists like the ones this video relate to- those that draw for money- do things by hand. Paint tool or pen tool, it can all give you Carpel tunnel.

I tried telling my dentist, that if he did my dental work for free, I had a lot of friends that I could show my teeth to, and I would recommend him, because surely other people would want dental work as well, and it'd be great exposure for him. People wouldn't ask anybody else for free work, so why does everyone think it's ok to ask artists for it?
