last year builders were removing a small rise in this field so they could build houses. The housing boom came to a sudden stop and all worked ended. A few pairs of sand martins moved in and very quickly the colony grew to 15 pairs. This year they must have chatted about this bank on the way up from Africa. There are now 70 pairs fixing last years tunnels and digging new ones. the spoil heaps can clearly be seen at the base of the colony. This bank is head height with the majority of nests at shoulder height. This colony is about 2 miles / 3km away from the nearest large body of water - Lough Neagh. There is a small reservoir 1.5 miles /2.5km away
The problem now is can these red listed birds have their bank saved from the builders?
great !
