Joe Jackson (Michael Jackson father) talks to the press at the 2009 BET AWARDS at the Shrine in los Angeles June 28. Jackson's image as a father was tainted throughout the late 1980s through the mid 1990s in which the media reported stories told by some of his children that Jackson was abusive towards his children. When he managed his family, he ordered each of them to call him "Joseph", which led to several siblings being estranged from their father.
In 2003, in an interview for BBC TV, Joseph admitted to using physical punishment on his children and also voiced his disapproval of homosexuality.
Michael Jackson claimed that from a young age he was physically and emotionally abused by his father, enduring incessant rehearsals, whippings and name-calling, but also contended that his father being a strict disciplinarian played a large part of his success. In one altercation — later recalled by Marlon Jackson - Joseph held Michael upside down by one leg and "pummeled him over and over again with his hand, hitting him on his back and buttocks." Joseph would also trip up or push his male children into walls. One night while Michael was asleep, Joseph climbed into his room through the bedroom window. Wearing a fright mask, he entered the room screaming and shouting. Joseph said he wanted to teach his children not to leave the window open when they went to sleep. For years afterward, Michael suffered nightmares about being kidnapped from his bedroom.

Michael first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. He said that during his childhood he often cried from loneliness and would sometimes get sick or start to vomit upon seeing his father. In Michael's other high profile interview, Living with Michael Jackson (2003), the singer covered his face with his hand and began crying when talking about his childhood abuse. Jackson recalled that Joseph sat in a chair with a belt in his hand as he and his siblings rehearsed and that "if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up, really get you."

  • Stop thanking goddman mothafucka Joe for "the gift of Michael Jackson" stupid B.E.T. Michael Jackson was the gift re: Mealticket, to Joe Jackson. Michael shared the gift of his talents with us, his fans, and shut Shady Joe out of his will like this awful man deserved.

  • What did they just put computers in sanitariums? Would you rather be one of the 250,000 black youth who were killed in 2008. Or a member of one of the more that 860,000 black inmates in privately owned for profit prisons? Or one of the blacks in this country who represent 30% of the unemployment statistics. Or beaten and possibly lynched by racist whites who kill without impunity. Oh I'm wasting my time. There isn't enough common sense here to fill up a peanut shell with the peanut in it.

  • @lmikepowers1 The cost of his fame was was how he turned out? I'd rather be a ghetto boy that could sing and dance then to not be loved by my dad to the point he became mentally ill and die at a young age.

  • how dare he I can not believe this man is up here acting all cool like his son didn't just die. only thing he thinking about are those sales in which i'm sure he will profit from. smdh

  • @elsoda Jackson was african too....

  • dat is rite, joe did get mj wat he has now.. but i still hate him, he was a EVIL father >:(

  • at the end-.. ladies and gentlemen Mr. Joe Jackson.... ..... CRI CRI CRI

  • @4EverMJPopKing Say what you will, if it weren't or him pushing him Michael would've never adopted his perfectionist attitude. Just because people feel Joe doesn't properly express love for his son gives them no right to infer he doesn't love him, has no emotion or is evil or whatever, grief is different for everybody, don't need to cry for cams. In actuality Joe provided Michael with his greatest gift/curse; a platform to realise his potential, at the expense of not being an average child.
