He originally wanted to be a test pilot or a diplomat, but things turned out differently. Manfred Wittenstein took over his father's sewing machine factory and turned it into a specialized maker of gears. He is now president of the German Engineering Federation.
There are few branches of the German economy that are doing as well as the machine sector. Companies are swamped with orders and exports are booming. That is also true of Wittenstein's own firm. But he's not ready to rest on his laurels. With his motto "there's nothing as old as yesterday's success" he is exerting pressure on German engine builders to be faster and better so as to maintain their global position. Dagmar Zindel paid a visit to Manfred Wittenstein.
