Hyrum, it was just proably a piece of MDF for demo purposes, but you hit the ones that are the worst, ok and ash can splinter off as well, light passes are always the best as well , never try to do it all at once ..."sneak up on it "

Why not just use a sharp, quality router bit and don't try to take off too much at once?

your suggestion of light cuts does work better , than a hard cut , but sometimes some woods are just so chip prone , it still can have issues, then ya bump cut it

You could call it an "intermediate punctuated reverse traversing stock removal cut followed by a conventional left to right full profile finishing cut" That's more catchy than "Bump cut" and rolls right off the tongue.

Thanks for a great technique. A question, after you have removed the bulk of the material wouldn't it be feasable to try a right to left cut and get the benifit of that smooth cutting
