You are clearly far more knowledgeable than me, but your suggestion still doesn't sound right. It must be me that is wrong.
By that reckoning, when I play something not quite so basic, such as - ( C// C7// Dm// Fm// C// G7// C/ ) as a variation for the last four bars of the chorus I am wrong again?

Dm is a sub for D7... You could also use am the fifth relative of D7...

@Jazzwayze Actually, the turnaraound is D7 G7 C, and the last turnaround is D7 G7 E7 A7 D7 G7 C.

The Basic (very basic) chords are :
in C:
C/, Am/, Dm/ G7/ (for eight bars)
Turnaround Dm G7 C
Middle Eight:
E7/// /// I A7/// ////I D7/// //// l G7/// //// (eight bars)
Back to beginning for eight bars.
They are called the 'Rhythm Changes' and used for thousands of songs... Including for example, 'The Flintstones'.
Hope this helps
