March 9, 1910 marked the birth of an individual whom I consider the greatest musical artist in human history: Samuel Barber. Many know Barber via his all-popular Adagio for Strings. However, Barber's musical spectrum qualifies him as what I coin a "musical polymath". Some of the most horrific ('Music for a Scene from Shelly'), violent and aggressive (Symph 2 mvts 1 and 3; Symph 1 mvt 4) musical compositions flowed from the pen of Barber -- Adagio is just one wavelength on wide lyrical spectrum that Barber masterfully commanded. The footage used in this video is arbitrary and random. The score is Symph 2 mvt ('Night Flight), orig written in 1943 for the US Army Air Corps while Barber was serving conscription. This tranquil, peaceful piece is encapsulated by violent, angular, and aggressive romanticism (mvts 1 & 3).

The video was taken on Mt. Wilson--the trail to Ech Rock. I ran the 100" telescope here from 1979 till 1981. I composed quite a lot of my music on the mountain,,, I had a house there. Samuel Barber was a great influence on my work. I dedicated the 3rd movement of my "Three Intimate Elegies and Fugue" to him. (It's on iTunes under "Deak: Music For Piano" Zita Carno, piano).
