  • It's not a silly question at all. Any candles and holders will do. It is preferable that the candles are new. This is an observance incumbent upon women. But if there are no women in the house a man may light as well.

    It does not really matter what candles you use ..

    The woman at home is lighting the candles, but if the man alone without a woman around he can light the candles on his own!

  • @jamyers - I too am new to lighting shabbos candles. While it's true that any candles are acceptable, let me tell you what I have learned the hard way that isn't necessarily evident to the FFBs.

    Long candles are very pretty, but since you can't put them out or move them once lit they are kind of a pain in the tuches! Cheap ones drip everywhere (I now know how to get wax out of a table cloth, btw) and bee's wax candles that don't drip are pricey.
