I think the real problem is that Mr. Neil simply doesn't sing well enough to compensate for his rather unfortunate appearance. Luciano was monstrous, but the minute he opened his mouth and began to sing, it didn't seem to matter so much, although at the end he was grotesque. Also, these hideous costumes would make anybody look fat, the sets are ugly, the staging non-existent, and the conducting is mediocre.

@papoocanada Must you really judge someone based on their weight? Would you rather an attractive singer with a bad voice?

Never heard of monstruously fat tenor Stuart Neill before. Suppose he had a very short career.

Poor Carlo, this costume makes it even worse. But he should really lose soem weight - okl not to be super-thin, but for his health.
I'm officially in love with this Posa. And just look at Furlanetto - he doesn't even sing yet, but he just coems in and he's THE King.

Believe it or not fat people actually do fall in love and can have the same romantic entanglements that thinner people do. And very frequently thinner people do fall for fat people. If you think about it, the women in this opera don't fall for Carlo for his looks but for his overly passionate heart. The costumers didn't do him any favor though either did they.

Ma che passa alla Scala?

How can anyone get so fat? Eboli is some kind of chubby-chaser? Difficult to imagine! No one really wants to watch that, even if he does sing well.

Easily on favourite tenor/baritone duet in all of opera done quite well
So he was the one who replaced Filanoti? Good choice, at least the voice is bigger. But this is quite poor.

I don't have a problem with Don Carlo being unattractive as long as he has the voice. Lets face it Posa is the hero in this opera and he has to look it and act it. I should know.
