They had a change of direction after their first album that didn't work out.

They didn't break up because of Jimmy's suicide. That was right after they'd finished album number 1. They pushed on and made another EP and album then broke up when the second album's singles didn't fair as well as they'd hoped, so far as I can tell...And @dreofthedead yes this is definitely a demo version, the structure is different to the LP version. @lojolle the best bands of this kind are Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

I don't usually listen to this kind of music, but I'm sad that the band is no more. Can anyone recommend bands like this?

I saw them at Glastonbury 2004, made shivers run up and down my spine then....still does! Could have been another God Speed I think?
