Great playing! I love this song and the way you play it definately captures how this song should be played! I saw in a comment down below that it came down to the calico or the 24 fret hartford. These are the exact two I'm trying to decide between. What made up your mind about them to get the calico?
Picking between the two was hard. I like the fancy Calico as I do the simple Hartford. They both played easily. The Calico's brighter & I could pick it more lightly to get the same volume. The Calico neck was also marked better. In the end I would love to own both. I think for all around playing the Calico sounds a tad better. The Hartford is stronger in the midrange tones, good if you record. I hope this helps but in the end, it comes down to what your own ear tells you. Good Luck!
I must say by now it is not your Calico that sounds great . I have been studying the way your playing and how and am determined to play as good as you . Its your playing thats sounds great . I have learned a lot from your video and am still trying to figure out the rest but I getting there . You are good thats for sure!!!
Hey Kenny, thanks for the compliment but let me assure you, I am just an OK player who has fun with my banjo. I was inspired to learn how to play by John Hartford who's got a pretty cool style and was a great stand alone performer. Check out some of his You Tube stuff, I think you'll like it. Anyhow, when my son gets home from school, I'll make a couple more vids and post them. Right now I'm working on two songs......"Take This Hammer" and "I'm Still Here". Keep on pickin'.....Doug
Thanks for the compliment. I play for my own entertainment so I do ok. I've had my Calico for about 6 months & love it. What I like most is I can pick it lightly and get lots of volume. So I can play faster & smoother since I don't have to pick hard. I played scores of banjos & the choice came down to the Calico and a Deering 24 Fret John Hartford model. The regular Hartford model didn't impress me but the 24 fret version is incredible.
