This movie (made by home-schooled high school students) is about the responsibility that comes with the freedom of speech.

The views and opinions stated in the video are not necessarily that of the Music City Star.

Movie script:
What does our constitution say about the freedom of speech?

Are we truly free to express ourselves?

Do we have a personal accountability when using this freedom?

Hi there. These are some of the questions that we'll be exploring in the next few minutes as go through this movie: "Free to be Responsible."

Why is the freedom of speech so important for the people of Tennessee? We asked Representative Pody this question. --- Representative Pody shot

That's exactly right. As a matter of fact, the constitution says that any of us can freely speak, write, and print on any subject. But then it says, "being responsible for the abuse of that liberty."

So, if we can write and speak about anything, then how could we possibly abuse that liberty?

One of the more common forms of abusing it, is defamation. If you were to write or say something false about someone else on purpose, that would, by definition, be defamation. If this rumor were to spread so far as to hurt their reputation, they could sue you the monetary value for the damage you did.

But defamation is just one of the illegal ways it is abused. Please hear me out when I say that I believe that most of the abuse is done legally. Let's see what State Senator Beavers has to say. --- Senator Beavers shot

Now I am so thankful that we have the right to express ourselves, but I would burn a flag, from any country, because men have died for it represents, thou I wouldn't make it illegal.

So what am I saying? I'm saying that being responsible for this right goes beyond what's legally okay and legally not. I'm saying that we need to be personally responsible, and not depend on someone else to be responsible for us. Thomas Jefferson said, "Responsibility is a tremendous engine in a free government.."

I want to encourage and challenge you to speak, write, and print about what you believe, but always remember that we are "Free to be Responsible." Thanks for watching.
