After doing a Lenten Study of Jesus, one might wonder what next? To which the only logical explanation is to Paul. This year marks a special 2000th anniversary of the saint birth and is being called the Year of Saint Paul, celebrating a special jubilee dedicated to him. Within the study of Paul, over the last three decades a revolutionary shift in scholarly thinking, especially amongst Protestant scholars, has been rocking the academic Christian world. Since the Reformation, studies in Pauline writings and theology have been heavily influenced by old Lutheran and Reformed views that portray the Judaism of Pauls day with the same negative attributes to that of 16th century Roman Catholicism. Led by E.P. Sanders, James D.G. Dunn, Bishop N.T. Wright, and others, a new perspective has been attempting to lift Pauls life and letters out of this old framework and interpret them based on an understanding of 1st century Judaism. Across the coming weeks, led by theological student Daniel N. Gullotta, scholars and students will be teaching at Saint Francis Nundah in order to help laypeople and clergy better understand the world, words, and works of this Radical Jew. The course will examine the historical events and cultural backgrounds that shaped the earliest days of the Jesus Movement, study the figures that made up the movement, as well as unity, conflict and diversity within the movement, and observe the theology of Paul with the help of the understanding given by the New Perspective on Paul. A Radical Jew promises to help people better understand Paul and the early church, attempt to build more common ground between Catholics and Protestants, improve the dialogue and understandings between Jews and Christians, and flesh out theological and historical meanings that matter just as much as they did then as they do now.
