This circuit is the core of the retina demonstrating the use of inhibitory surrounds. A complete retinal circuit is formed when this core is combined with motion detection circuitry.

The use of inhibitory surrounds combined with "AND" type neurons produce a simple yet elegant edge detector.

In simple animals the patterns these retinal circuits recognize are specialized to their habitat. In mammals these pattern have become image primitives that form the foundation for more sophisticated scene analysis in the cortex.
