  • People often ask about white gloves. Have you ever tried to read a book wearing gloves? Best thing you can do is wash and dry your hands and handle it with care.

  • It's actually a misconception that all all old artifacts should be handled with gloves. I did some some grad work in a rare book collection at a library, and the concern with wearing gloves is that you lose the finesse your hands naturally have, and so you're more likely to tear the pages of old books while wearing gloves. I'm sure there's a fuller explanation than the one I gave, but that's what I've been told. The glove/no-glove decision is often left to the archivist or curator.
