This optical illusion relies on a principle called "Chromatic Adaptation".

An object may be viewed under various conditions. For example, it may be illuminated by the sunlight, the light of a fire, or a harsh electric light. In all of these situations, the visual system indicates that the object has the same color: an apple always appears red, whether viewed at night or during the day. This feature of the visual system is called chromatic adaptation.

Have you ever entered a movie theater on a sunny afternoon? The room probably appeared completely dark but as your visual system adjusted to the reduced level of light you were able to see better after a few moments.

This "adaptation mechanism" allows our eyes to recover from an oversensitivity to a particular stimuli. "Chromatic adaptation" occurs when our eyes adjust to certain color stimuli. Chromatic adaptation is one of the more easily fooled aspects of vision, and is prone to some of the most spectacular optical illusions.

  • its not real i saw without staring at the dot and we could see the screen change when we fast forward it!!!

  • You're right. The screen does change. That's why this is best presented in video form. That's not the illusion. The illusion is the fact that the screen changes to a black and white image, but by following the directions and staring at the dot, it will appear to change to full color at first, then will slowly fade to black and white, even though the normal full-color version never existed.

  • haha. i'm switching my computor to negative color mode and see what happens. xD

  • ಠ_ಠ

  • Nice, illusion, but i know how it work now! There is a colored version, but, it passes so quick that, the only way you can see it, is focusing your eye in one spot, which keeps the image in your brain. But watching it like on regular makes you watch all over the place, therefor you can't see it, passing at a few milliseconds!

  • Awesome. This one's perfect. Even after i look at the whole picture and the color fades away, when i look back at the dot, the colors come back. Just awesome !

  • How does my eyes know what color to use in the black and white picture?!?

  • AMAZING Ö

  • WOW O_O

  • @xSerah wtf of course the scren changes but it changes to black and white but in ur eyes its in colours till u blink or look away coz ur brain figures out what the clours shud be

  • Is it possible for different people to see different colors?
