Shawn Alladio demonstrates for students another skill set manuever titled "RIUS" pronounced (rioos). This will also be done in the impact zone of the surfline on the 3rd day of class. K38 builds specific skill sets with multi tasked situational and operational skills for PWC rescue boat operators and crew. K38 trains with and without rescue boards, we are never dependent upon one style of 'operation'. Thanks again Dana for the patient role playing! K38 Portugal Instructor vid from Antonio Mestre

  • We cover that in class, it's not comfortable, this is for a short haul for safety recovery, not distance. Have you had a broken femur in the water before with now sled? Well, this is what I have had to do on 3 occassions, it was my only opportunity and it is not easy, you can only move at idle speed, and watch the patient's hand contact on your body...very important...

  • We teach skill building drills that students use as operational/situational balance, multi tasking and decision making commitments 'assets' applied, it depends upon the environment/situation

  • Very slick, but I can't understand how you would handle that rescue inside the surfline. Also, if he had an injured leg, surely he's not going to be very comfortable with the water jet squirting right at it???

  • Surfing's Greatest Misadventures surf book, has a story from a big wave event in South Africa, it was my rescue of Ian Armstrong. There is a picture after the rescue, it shows what I did to bring us out of the impact zone with a paralyzed surfer. I had to ride backwards, this is where most of these came from, not theory

  • you can do this in wave and there are different ways to lift them onto the ski i have done my k38 trainning a hard three days but worth it our instructor was ben good fella learnt a lot

  • this is very diferent, even with samll waves

  • Yes, I suppose in that kind of situation it is your only option. I can imagine that its not easy!!

This highlights for me how international co-operation is SO important. There are so few RWCs operated in France, very few people have any practical experience. Most of what I've learnt has been from trial and error, and the training manual published by the Hawaiian Lifeguard Authority. I can see I have a hell of a lot more to learn! :-)
