Georgy Pavlovich Vinogradov (Георгий Павлович Виноградов) sings "Jealousy and Pride", the fifteenth song of Franz Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" (Beautiful Miller's Wife), written in 1823. The songs were originally a poem by Wilhelm Müller, and here they are translated into Russian by I.Tyumenev. The recording was probably made in Moscow in around 1951.

THIS IS SONG NO. 15 OF A TRAGIC LOVE STORY IN 20 SONGS, HERE:

TO FOLLOW THE STORY, READ POTTED WORDAGE BELOW. (Our poor little floury man is so jealous, but too proud to let the girl know.)

Potted wordage #15:
Brook, you are ruffled, wild and angry . . . Are you angry at the predatory hunter, or at my flirtatious millermaid? She is forward . . . when the hunter comes home, she hangs over the gate or out of her window . . . Brook - reprimand the girl, but don't tell her I'm sad . . . tell her I'm making a whistle to entertain children . . .

Our hero can't get rid of the metronome/hunter, can he? Hehe . . . but he can turn it round. He has hijacked the classical discipline of fast rhythm and stylised virtuoso song that makes for an intense and powerful work and sounds like a wheel spinning, then our Pierrot has taken all brakes off and thrown in a bucket of Romantic angst to make the song fly off his waterwheel like a weapon. Result: great Romantic aria.

Film location: Thwaites Mill, North Yorkshire. The mill has two waterwheels, and this is the smaller one; two other views of it are shown in songs #6 and #8. (Two views of the larger wheel are shown in songs #7 and #11.)

  • With dizzying speed and youthful

    flexibility, Vinogradov's voice bobbs

    and weaves through the rigorous

    demands of Schubert's poetic

    angst with polish, grace, and

    inspired expression! The piano

    and millwheel do their utmost

    to reinforce the anxious atomosphere!

Linda, your videos just get better and

    better...Marvelous work! Thank you!
