Metaphysical, and seemingly computer generated, Ries Straver's "Empedocles" is a video recorded on the edge of one of Mount Etna's craters. Set in an environment that is reminiscent of Plato's cave, the figure projected on the surface of the wall seems to be the last of remaining life from that famous allegory. The figure turns in and outside of itself as clouds of steam drift into the lens of the camera.
Ries Straver's "Empedocles" is, at first glance, a study of a natural phenomenon but the foreboding characteristics of the event elevates it to a spiritual realm in which other laws of time and space exist.
Note: No digital effects were applied to the video you see. The original recording was used as source material for sound effects. Sound by Ramon De Marco.
