Classic song about the way things used to be- moral-minded, genuinely content people who got joy from other things besides drugs. Plus, this song represents a lifestyle.. unfortunately, one which has been replaced with metro-sexual, contemporary, apathetic generation without a moral set of beliefs but just "go with the flow".

Its satire. He wrote it because he was angry at the more extreme protesters who said that the Vietnamese communists were in the right (both sides were in the wrong). He knew what it meant to have freedom taken away (prison). He made the song more extreme as a sort of spoof of the opposite of a hippie. From wikipedia: He always considered what became a redneck anthem to be a spoof, and even the hippies that are derided in the lyrics have taken a liking to the song and find humor in the lyrics.

It's not the choice of lifestyle I disagree with. It's the looking down on anything different. People who can relate to these lyrics tend to be the kind who love to shove their ideologies and beliefs down other people's throats. I'm sure you know what I mean...

No you did not. You simply stated that you thought the lyrics were shallow/bullshit. You did not explain why you thought that was the case.

I think you'd get a lesser amount of hate-replies if you explained your position.
