This is a reconstruction of a very close call that took place at the threshold of runway 24 Left at The Los Angeles International Airport on August 19, 2004.

A full transcript of communications is located at the bottom right of the screen, a narrative of events is located in the upper left corner of the screen.

This reconstruction is timed with the aircraft movements as they transpired.

  • if i were the asiana crew, i would have mentioned to tower, 'uhh, thats our runway, uhh the southwest is on our runway'

  • the SW was taking off on 24L as instructed and the Asiana 747 was cleared to land 24R but lined up on 24L on final.

  • @dominodash21 24R is the normal landing runway and 24L is the normal takeoff runway. they do switch from time to time

  • @nathanfishing3000 the nose is banked up at such an angle that he probably couldnt see the runway

  • why dident the pilot see the southwest on the runway in the 1st place?

  • Yes a good reconstruction of the event.

  • i agree with you Common raven, pilots do manually check up cant depend on ATC

  • No the Releifed controller cleared him for 24L, the new controller though he was landing at 24R so he cleared SWA440 for 24L when he shoulda been on 24R, it was the new air traffic controllers fault
