My late father flew 97 night heckler missions with VC-3 flying the F4U-5N off of USS Boxer and USS Kearsarge. Most of his sorties were to blow up trucks, trains, bridges and tunnels.
He went on to be an experimental test pilot with Douglas/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing between 1957-1999. A believer in Jesus Christ, a gentleman, wonderful father, patriot and accomplished pilot. He is missed.

That's an F4U-N, the pod is a radar used for night interception etc.

does anybody know if the drop tanks really work on these old warbirds. are they just for show? i hear by law that they can not drop the tanks in flight. not that you would want too.

What is that white bubble like thing on the right wing? What is it for?

The dome on the starboard wing housed airborne interception radar. This specific model was built for use as a night fighter.
