This song has been in the making for about 3 years - hard to do justice to such an interesting life in 3 verses! The Ivan Rudolph book "John Flynn" captured my imagination - it's a dynamic and enthralling telling of the tale. I love the way Flynn saw a need, and worked creatively & persistently to meet it - even grabbing others along the way and saying "We need this... can you invent it?!". He had a passion to live out what he knew of Jesus - it led him to a whole lifetime of daring adventure in the harsh outback of the early 1900s... and he left it a much better place! He was also an avid photographer, and most of these photos are his, from the Australian Inland Mission collection. Enjoy!

LYRICS:
In the great red loneliness, in the blazing heat
Aussie men eke out an existence, far from city streets.
Life was harsh and bitter here, a struggle to survive,
no mother or wife to care if you lived or died.

But from a vision grew a passion, when a faith burst into action,
A great mantle of safety, an outback community in the inland:
Flynn of the Inland.

A young man with a heart on fire could not ignore the call:
Put Christ first and spare nothing for the good of all.
Imagination and compassion drove him all his days
to keep battling to make the bush a much brighter place.

One man's dream helped others see the power of love & creativity...

By camel, truck or motor car, the dangers all around,
Doctors, nurses & padres adventured inland.
And what a radical idea to make a doctor fly,
Communication to the homestead, and schooling from the sky...

But from a vision grew a passion, when a faith burst into action,
A great mantle of safety, an outback community in the inland:
Flynn of the Inland...
