You say "they voted to allow gay marriage." Problem is, they didn't. Again, Iowa did not "vote" to allow gay marriage. In fact the law on the Iowa code book in Iowa in 2011 is that marriage is "between one man and one women."
Thus the whole problem. Unlike New York, which did vote to allow gay marriage in a constitutional manner, Iowa's Supreme Court unconstitutionally ruled to "allow" gay "marriage" and make it "legal".
