http://www.hotforwords.com the origin of the word Inception.

Hello my dear students, I was watching the trailer for the movie Inception, which looks amazing by the way. It's a script that the director Chris Nolan worked on for 10 years. The studios decided to allow Chris to make this movie he has be working on for over 10 years. And the movie is called Inception and it involves using technology to be able to get into people's dreams and extract information.. most notably for corporate espionage, to figure out what your competitors are up to.

The movie takes place when Leonard DiCaprio is hired, not to retrieve information, but to actually PUT an idea into a competitor's head. And then all hell breaks loose!

Nolan called the movie Inception, and since I've never really heard of that word, HotForWords decided to investigate the word Inception.

Intro

Inception comes to English in the late 1400s from the Latin inceptionem, from inceptus, which is the pp of incipere - which means "begin, take in hand".

It's this meaning that is the most common definition for inception.. the beginning, the start, the commencement of something. The British also use the word to describe a graduation ceremony.

But if we examine inception more, going back even further in Latin, we see that incipere comes from in- meaning "in, on" and cipere from capere meaning "take, seize"

This gave us the third meaning for inception, which means "the action of taking in, as an organism" for example. Edgar Allen Poe wrote "The result is the immersion of the mouth and nostrils, and the inception, during efforts to breathe while beneath the surface, of water into the lungs."

So, Nolan used this sense of the word when naming his film as Dicaprio ends up immersing himself INTO the dreams of other people. And of course, that's when all hell breaks loose!

There you go, another mystery solved by your trusty HotForWords, for your homework, have you ever been able to control your dreams? I think they call it Lucid Dreaming... you know, when you are aware that you are dreaming and are able to decide what you dream. I was never able to do it, maybe one of you can enter my dream and help me.

  • Ask me some for easy.

  • Being lucid does not mean you will have any control over the dream. Control and Lucidity CAN but are not always connected. However if you do become lucid, you have a high chance of taking control. In order to achieve the state of lucidity you need to do RCs (Reality Checks). PM me for more info on how to if interested.

  • I can lucid dream. It takes a powerful mind but it's possible. I don't do it all the time though, I doubt you can. Last time I did it was a month or two ago. Things don't always work out though. Sometimes when I want to fly I will jump up and just hang there in the air, its sucks at times but yeah...I can do it. :)

  • actually i have been able to control my dreams but only for a while like sometimes when i dream and i say wait a minute i am dreaming and i try to make a disicion seconds later i wake up.. so to be able to control my dream i need a powerful drug to keep me sleep and dream ... i hope all the teacher where like you hoooooooot lol

  • the movie inception may be fake, but it got me thinking if this life is real or just a dream. the only way you can find out is if you kill yourself! IM GOING CRAZY TO KNOW IF MY LIFE IS REALLY A DREAM OR NOT!!!!

  • This so wild! I just posted this on another you tube vid. :

"To control a dream, alter an altered state of consciousness, requires an incredible level of self awareness in an unaware state. It can be done without any formal training. I do not dream anymore. Perhaps that is the cost. Good luck and thank you for helping me to remember." You called it "lucid dreaming" which I have heard of before. Coincidence or lucid fate with my favorite Hot for Words girlie?

  • I love that movie

  • I'm still practicing my lucid dreaming ever since I've seen Inception! (Best movie EVAR!) No luck yet but I've came close! And I'd love to help you with your lucid dreaming!

  • i came
