Explanation of how liquid crystals work, like in mood rings and mood patches. Demonstration of how to make a mood patch thermometer using overhead transparencies, packing tape, black spray paint, and cholesteric liquid crystals (a 50:50 mixture of cholesteryl pelargonate, CP, and cholesteryl oleyl carbonate, COC). Examples of every-day products that use CLCs.

Presentation by Anne Marino, Optimax Systems, Inc., www.OptimaxSI.com, and Steve Jacobs and colleagues, Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester, www.lle.rochester.edu. Video courtesy of Optimax Systems, Inc., www.OptimaxSI.com.

  • what I need is to find out how to make my own mood stones can't seem to buy them in raw form they are all mounted in rings, jewelry etc. I just need the raw stones

  • @Onewitnessus Sorry, don't know anything about commercially-available mood stones or jewelry. Maybe ask at Claire's? Or maybe you could find inexpensive jewelry and take out the mood rings somehow. Good luck.

  • @tannerfeemster: Sorry, I can't help you. Not even sure what a "boogie board writing tablet" is! Good luck.
