No, they're both religions. Westerners imagine that there is a meaningful difference between secular ideology and religious ideology, but there isn't, not here or anywhere else, at any point in human history. The idea that they can be separate is unique to the west and then only since the enlightenment. As far as a secular diety, it's Hobbes's man in the "state of nature." After all, like the abstraction of god, this abstraction is the justification for power and the form of institutions.

Correct. Religion has a *function.* But if that's the case, then the old fossilized and institutionalized versions of those belief systems will be consciously recognized as "religion." While the new ones which inevitably arise aren't recognized as religious at all. Ideology, like religion, is social theory for lay people. It's why fascism looked religious, or nationalism generally - because it is. That would describe the "capitalist" world view. It's not a system, it's religious belief.
