Billy Joel's popular rapid-fire mash-up of 121 historical events, deaths and scandals of the later 20th century, complete with an excellent slideshow courtesy of another Youtube user. The events are listed in chronological order, beginning with those of 1949 (the year of Joel's birth) and concluding with China's declaration of martial law in 1989. Its structure and frenetic listing has been copied and parodied many times, such as the Internet meme 'Pet Names for Genitalia'.
Many of Billy Joel's songs touch on historical themes and events, such as the Cold War, and he has sometimes stated that he would have liked to teach history had he not become a musician. We Didn't Start the Fire spent several weeks at #1 in US and global charts and played a significant role in boosting enrolments in college history courses across the United States in the late 1980s.
