TORC (http://www.torctech.com) takes special guest Anne Clelland for a ride in its ByWire XGV™ - a Hybrid Escape drive-by-wire platform designed to provide researches, unmanned systems developers, and system integrators with a cost-effective platform for rapid testing and integration of more advanced technologies.

Anne has been a friend of TORC for a while now, and always wanted a ride in Team VictorTango's DARPA Urban Challenge winning "Odin," the fully autonomous Hybrid Escape. The next best thing was to give her a spin in TORC's ByWire XGV (http://www.ByWireXGV.com), and actually let her drive it.

Here's a quick video highlighting her experience.

For unmanned systems developers, lead system integrators, and research universities, the ByWire XGV™ provides drive-by-wire control, tightly integrated safety components, and an onboard power management system allowing you to stay focused on developing advanced unmanned vehicle technology.

The ByWire XGV utilizes the Hybrid Escapes proven vehicle technologies, tapping into electronic controls, available battery power, and the on-road / off-road ruggedness for flexibility of application.

Controlled through a unified Ethernet interface, the drive-by-wire conversion is seamlessly integrated with the Hybrid Escape factory electronics. The ByWire XGV platform allows electronic control of the steering, throttle, shifter, braking, engine, and signals. In addition, information such as vehicle speed, warnings, and errors can be monitored. The result is a clean conversion that leaves the front and rear seats unaltered for maximum versatility.

The integrated SafeStop™, a wireless emergency stop system with a 6 mile LOS range, provides emergency stop functionality. Manual stop buttons are mounted inside and outside of the vehicle for additional safety.

The onboard managed 2kW power supply is more than sufficient for powering additional computers, sensors and other payloads you may add to the system. TORC's optional PowerHub™ products are rack mountable, including a High Voltage DC-DC power converter and PowerHub™ Distribution Boards (5V, 12V, and 24V), and are configurable over Ethernet for easy integration into an autonomous system.
