From a recital in New York City of Israeli concert pianist Elisha Abas. He was a prodigy who, during his youth, shared the stage with Leonard Bernstein and Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall, and performed in a televised concert with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. During a visit to Israel, Artur Rubinstein encountered the young Elisha and, upon hearing him play, sought to mentor him. Elisha still has the engraved watch Rubinstein gave him to commemorate their rapport. But, despite this brilliant beginning, Mr. Abas has only recently returned to the world of music after wanting to withdraw from it at age 14. Among other endeavors, he has been a professional soccer player in Israel's Premiere League, and he is also the great-great grandson of Russian composer and pianist Alexander Scriabin. He was a life-long student of the legendary Israeli piano teacher Pnina Salzman, who was a pupil of Alfred Cortot. Mr. Abas's Russian debut took place in Saint Petersburg in October 2008. Recently, his recording of Brahms's First Piano Concerto was released and he performed in Caracas with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. In April 2012 he will perform Chopin's Second Piano Concerto at New York's 92nd Street Y.
