In this week's episode of The Jesus Trip, John Crowder challenges consensus views on fasting. While the practice has become popular and trendy among charismatics in recent years, many are bound in human works and willpower. John dismantles some wrong notions about asceticism. He poses a provoking fast food challenge to those who would appeal to food deprivation as the basis of their spirituality.

The glorious offense of the gospel may push you to rethink some perspectives on the topic of fasting, and instead choose to feast on the finished works of Christ! For more on Sons of Thunder, visit www.thenewmystics.com.

  • Hey John, what about Matthew 6:16..."WHEN you fast..." ? It seems Jesus is saying that we WILL continue fasting in this verse. Whatcha think?

  • @withdance This is not a commandment to fast. Especially not for us. Good to look at what Jesus was saying here - the point was about hypocrisy and matters of the heart, not food (i.e. If you're gonna fast, at least cheer up for God sake ... Have some JOY!). At the end of the day, you've always gotta redefine fasting back to God's definition of a true fast - Isaiah 58 - which deals with issues of the heart.

    Cheers!

  • Here are some other verses during the New Covenant era Acts 13:2-3 and Acts 14:23 it mentions fasting

Luke 2:27( though before the New covenant ) seem to show we can serve God with fastings

Paul mentions fastings twice in 2 corinthians...but to me I guess the motive is what is important about fasting.. the why behind

  • @free1here Paul wasn't fasting in 2 Cor. He was deprived of food in his persecutions. Read in context. The other verses you mentioned were covered in the video. They fasted to focus on the Lord before making a big decision like ordaining/laying hands on leaders. Shaka bonky

  • the true gospel offends religious ppl

  • i noticed that several yrs ago, that there is no new testament commandment 2 fast---keep on preachin the truth, bro

  • Truth!

  • AMEN

  • WHAT!? Why havent anybody told me this before! This is awesome, I always get weird when I do not eat.

  • I can see how fasting might have health benefits depending on what kinda crap people eat. Spiritually tho didn't jesus say it's not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him but what comes out?

  • 5 people are fasting right now and are hungry :D

  • Really Really GOOD

  • Ok, I proov what you are John, but I start to like you :)

  • John, what if you are so whacked and blissed and tranced out on Jesus that you forget about food? Would that be considered fasting? I remember that there were actually saints of old that fasted 80 days and some even more I think. What if you don't deliberately go into a fast but just forget about eating because you're in a really long lasting trance?? :))
