I chose Carley, Doug seemed too plain and dull, played through once with each character and turns out Carleys the better choice. More interesting conversations and theres an entire section of episode 3 that you don't get if you chose Doug

Yes choices did make a promise. Telltale said your actions will affect the story, they never said- If you say or do this, than this character will die, or if you say or do this you save this character who does this in the next episode.

It was about people's opinion, like if you killed Lilly's Dad she wouldn't help you against Andy St John. If you helped Lilly's Dad she would shoot him for you. It's all about what people think about you and how they act towards you. Not life or death.

You could also try and play the game as silent as possible. Saying nothing when you can and say as little as possible when you have to.
