This revealing FRONTLINE documentary Rumsfelds War shows that U.S. Army Chief of Staff, General Shinseki wanted too many troops to invade Iraq; he wanted 560, 000 low-quality, wheeled, foot-slogger troops to flood Iraq--only after a Desert Storm-style massive air bombardment to reduce the chances of generals making mistakes and expand budgetary end strength. Instead, Colonel Macgregor offered to CENTCOM, a tracked, armored maneuver force of 50, 000 elite troops of high QUALITY to take Baghdad after a cold start to achieve, strategic, operational and tactical surprise and THEN fly-in about 15, 000 light infantry troops to secure civilian infrastructure--only until the Iraqi Army Soldiers--who did as we asked and didnt resist us--are rehired as we did in Grenada and Panama to restore peaceful order quickly. The first part of Macgregors plan was half-implemented and West Baghdad fell quickly to the all-tracked 3rd Infantry Rock of the Marne Division (Mechanized) on April 3-5, 2003--but one half of the maneuver axis composed of marines in trucks couldnt punch through weak Iraqi resistance and was 6 days late reaching the eastern half of the capital city, resulting in Saddam and Baath party subordinates to escape and start a rebellion against us.

The light troops to prevent looting were not flown in and the Iraqi army was not rehired in favor of carpetbagger contractors $$$ coming in to try to govern Iraq as a quasi-imperial possession of them and Rumsfelds DoD instead of the former General Colin Powells State Department which has long years of successful expertise at nation-building.

Ever since the collapse of the Saddam regime, the $$$ lucrative Stability and Support Operation (SASO) persistant warfare occupation racket military bureaucrats like boots-on-the-ground (BOGster) USMC General Hoar lust for (run some presence patrols and head back to the FOB for hot chow) gave way to a bitter Sub-National Conflict (SNC). Foot-slogger narcissist General Hoar was the jerk in 1993 who denied Army Rangers tracked tanks in Mogadishu, Somalia—so his talk about caring for the troops by supplying overwhelming force is rank hypocrisy. When Iraq became a daily version of Blackhawk Down!, a fiction and mythology was created by some Army and marine generals to CYA--that the Iraq enterprise failed because Rumsfeld wouldnt give them enough U.S. troops—as if the 158, 000 there now isnt enough. The way to restore order in a foreign country is to quickly get their own security forces on the job—not drive around as outside invaders in vulnerable wheeled trucks asking to be blown up by a land mine or RPGs. This opportunity was lost when the Bush neocons chose to racketeer $$$ instead of turn over Iraq back to the Iraqi people; with only a discrete U.S. presence to advise and be there if needed in a pinch in the form of an all-tracked, armored Quick Reaction Force (QRF). We are handing cash $ to Sunni rebels to be security guards today when we could have paid $ trained Iraqi Army Soldiers to keep the peace back in 2003!
