The German Martingale is a very effective Training aid, but needs to adjusted properly and used properly. It is a TRAINING Device, not working Tack. Buckaroo John Brand points out what features to look for when choosing and How to Fit

  • Great product. The only thing I would change is the straps that atach to the rings. I would prefer some type of cord with more give than leather.

  • I use the german martingale on my dressage gelding just to tweak his head down. I do not use it to teach collection. his old owner rode him with his head and muzzle in the air like a coyote, so this has just spared me from having to pull to make him give to the bridle.

After about two weeks using this I took it off and he stays rounded all by himself with me barely having to draw him down. It is not a cruel device, nor does it provide any extra control IMO, but it helps as a training aid.

  • Yep, just another piece of crapp to put a horse on his forehand, Leg to hand people leg to hand!!! Your horse needs to come from behind into your hand!

  • man this martingale looks like it has so much control!!!!

  • another load of strapping to pull a horses head down and in, that throws them onto the forehand - a trademark of western riding, if you want your horse to collect you need to teach it to move off your leg and into the bridle. In english this martingale is the market harbrough, a type of limited draw rein, not to be used lightly or in the wrong hands by anyone. the english version has been around since 1935. at least you said its a so called training aid, you should also scare beginners off use

  • Oh for goodness sake! it's taken me 10 minutes to download 45 seconds of video! I'll come back when your not so busy.

  • Great vid! I am looking at getting one for a particular horse and this was very helpful!
