So yeah, i bought the car with a bad exhaust manifold, replaced it with Exhaust Headers, and find this noise. =\ It's been with the car since i bought it about 5 months ago, i was told it was lifters, but i'm not so sure anymore. I hope it's not my engine dying.

  • whats the mileage on that thing? sounds like someone beat the crap out of her without doing any service.

  • @teebrron

126,000 miles-ish. She's pretty beat up. I think i need to replace the alternator, and it's slowly falling apart. Yayyy... I think she was in a front end collision, and i have a bit more to fix her up with.

Just needs a new front left spring, front n back bumpers, new right tail light, and the spoilers break light clips are almost all broken off. =\

  • I'm having the same problem,

  • @IAMCanadianJM

I'm having no problems with my car at all, just idles a bit rough at a stop light and my steering wheel always shakes when I'm at a stop light. =\

  • @550Watts It still has the tick, but i think it's going away.

  • Any help would be appreciated. =D

  • It is thirsty for Lucas oil. Reaally does work

  • i got the same sound with my hyundai santa fe.... hyundai hyundai hyundai! ohhhhh hyundai...

  • I'm almost sure that is the chain that move the cams

  • there aint timing chain on this 97 model, its the valve settings u need to re-set the height of the valve lift, in this case, the valve hit the piston a little bit by a millimeters. it wont do any harm onto the engine..i have the same exact problem..

  • Yep, thirded or fourthed the timing chain.

  • I have the same sound coming from mine. The dual overhead cams are connected by a chain ($20) and is likely thlee culprit. I blew a head gasket on mine, so this weekend I'm putting on a rebuilt head, new timing belt, cam chains and water pump. I'll let you know if the sound goes away.

  • replace the exhaust manifold gasket. I had the same problem but that was what fixed it. If that doesn't help change the oil and replace the filter with a Hyundai filter. Our cars dont like cheap oil filters, or anything made my anyone other than hyundai for that matter

  • Use the screwdriver stethoscope method. Get a large screwdriver, put your ear to the handle end, then stick the tip on non moving parts to pin down where it's coming from.

  • It's the timing chain!

she is to the right of the motor!

    Just change it!

  • change the car
