It is SUPPOSE to be a narcissistic* sounding song! It was penned for the extremely talented, Gwen Verdon who starred as 'Lola' in "Damn Yankees" (1955) on Broadway. She won the 1956 Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Verdon would also star as 'Lola' in the film version of "Damn Yankees" (1958) singing, 'Whatever Lola Wants'. Perhaps you should see the song in its original context at some time. Vaughan's version is a rendition.
